#5lbsforjoanie

The women in my mother’s family are predisposed to a lot of crap. Illiteracy, inbreeding, not knowing where babies come from (I have 250 cousins – true story), cattiness, cunty-ness, poor-white-trashiness, poor-Injun-trashiness, cancers of the non-gender-specific varieties, phenomenally bad choices in men… the list goes on and on.

Two other things we’re predisposed to are obesity and diabetes.

Last Sunday, March 12th, my cousin Joanie passed away. She had been overweight and often morbidly obese for most of her adult life. She was only in her early 50′s when she died.

Joanie was… much of what I described above, but without the meanness. She was a truly good person with a kind heart. She was known as the family’s angel, who would be scarce most of the time, and then would not leave your side when you were sick and dying. She was there when my mother died, and even though they were not related by blood, was there for my father too. Life didn’t treat Joanie well, but she is being rewarded now. That is one thing I have no doubt about.

Anyway, most of us can stand to lose a few pounds. I myself have lost 21 since Christmas Eve. In addition to losing a few pounds around the middle, we also need to keep our blood sugar in check. Have this tested annually, when you have your regular physical.

And do yourself a favor – lose #5lbsforjoanie.
