Petty Pieties Redux: Kennedy Edition

I might be an asshole, but I’m an honest asshole with a clear conscience: Ted Kennedy is dead and I really don’t care about all the garment-rending going on in the press.

Ted Kennedy killed a woman in a case of vehicular manslaughter, then used his connections to first attempt to cover it up, then get it marked down like a post-Christmas sale to “leaving the scene of an accident”. How such a coward could be lionized for his lack of testicular fortitude, I do not know. The death of Mary Jo Kopechne was an accident, but his actions at the time of and in the weeks following the accident were beyond the pale. Poor, scared rich kid gets strings pulled to make the whole thing go away. Shameful.

The most important thing Edward Kennedy ever did for America was to be born with the right surname, a name he exploited more and more as each (more famous, more useful) family member succumbed to tragedy.

I admit, I do feel bad for the Kennedy-Shriver clan, as they just lost (the far more moral and useful) Eunice a little over a week ago. They must be going through a hard time right now.

But as for Teddy himself, at every turn he sought to undermine American values. He undermined the troops in Vietnam. Subverted the country and worked with the Commies during the Cold War. Was a total NIMBY when it came to his pious devotion to care for the planet. Aided and abetted the murderers, rapists, drug addicts and other assorted felons in his own family.

And now he’ll be buried in Arlington National Cemetery. What an insult that would be to his brother John, who not only served in the US Navy but was blown out of his boat in an attack. Teddy, on the other hand, was shielded from duty by his father. Much as the left accused President Bush of being. I wonder how they’ll feel if the Bush family requests his burial at Arlington.

Klansman/Senator Robert Byrd is calling for the health reform bill – which touts a system no one in the House or Senate would be obliged to use – to be named after Kennedy, thereby making the death of his colleague into a political point grab. Classy.

Stacy McCain has an excellent roundup, and calls for today – August 26, 2009 – to be named as Mary Jo Kopechne Memorial Day, in honor of drunken Ted’s fatal error of judgment.

My final word is as a Catholic: It is hoped that Kennedy made his full confession to God. He never took public responsibility for the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, but one hopes he took private responsibility for it. It is not for mankind to forgive, because forgiveness is divine. We can try, but in my case, I have failed. I’ll discuss that failure with God, in the same manner I hope Kennedy discussed his failings. Otherwise he will spend eternity trapped in an airless car, submerged in the shallow water of Chappaquiddick, gasping for air.

Well said. Can`t think of a thing to add.

Let us never forget that Kennedy fully supported the murder of millions of unborn children. He was a waste of space. Good riddance to bad rubbish, I say!

  4. Mangas Colorados says:

My first reaction was to say, he’ll have to look Mary Jo in the eye, but then it occurred to me that he’s not going to the same place, very likely. Yes, too, I hoped that he had a chance to make a full confession, but I think likely he would try to skate around that, as well. Certainly, he has to look his creator in the eye, and I hope be made to watch the last moments of Mary Jo Kopechne on this earth.

I haven’t seen it mentioned, but a measure of the corruptness of his soul is his response to the pardon of Richard Nixon, “There is one justice for the poor, and another for the rich and powerful”. Irony wasn’t his strong suit, but one would hope that somebody close to him would say, “That is true, and that’s the only reason you aren’t saying that from prison!”

  5. John P. says:

You know, just a word on Mary Jo’s death. It was discovered afterwards that she didn’t immediately die but survived for a while in a small air-pocket. The water she was in was quite shallow and Kennedy could have dove down and rescued her had he acted immediately. Imagine being underwater, all alone and in complete darkness while your oxygen supply slowly runs out. What Kennedy did, his cowardice, his TOTAL insouciance regarding Mary Jo’s horrid fate is unforgivable, utterly unforgivable

  6. Xanthippa says:

It is beyond my comprehension how the Americans – and so many others – have idolized this criminal family.

The Kennedys made their fortune through organized crime! That is a matter of well-recorded history. Yet, so many people think them to somehow be above the law: as demonstrated again by the tragedy of Mary Jo Kopechne…

What is it about this bunch of criminals that makes them so idolized – and so many people so willfully blind to their crimes?

Simple. He’s a left wing liberal. They get away with anything because they hide their personal immorality behind a cloud of public egalitarianism. Tommy Douglas preached steralization of teh handicapped. He hated homosexuals. But he is lionized because he’s a socialist who wanted to give every lazy worthless bum in the country the same healthcare as honest working folks and manke the honest working folks pay for it.

  11. Right Girl says:

I’ve seen a lot of so-called conservatives whinge about articles like the one I wrote above, saying “We shouldn’t do to Kennedy what the left did to Tony Snow.”

Um… show me Snow’s body count, and we’ll talk.

I didn’t want Wendy to stand alone in the asshole room.

I didn’t want to pile on either, but something told me that the legacy of a pandering, cheapjack crime family that used it’s money and power to cover all manner of slime up to and including death, and then tried to pay penance with handouts from one pocket to another, need no more accolades better than this.

    Right on, Righty Girl

People call me asshole too, but even so I have this pang of conscience that tells me that while the devil may very well have the final dealings with the Kennedys, we still need justice this side of death.
