One of my Twitter pals, Miles, is pimping a party. Big bands, brass, cool fashions, evening wear… I would totally go to this event at the Royal York at the end of the month, but on one condition:
Mark Steyn has to be my date.
Because really… who the hell else would I go to an event like this with??
I have said for years that I was sick of seeing the 60s, 70s and now the 80s coming back all the time, and it was about time someone brought back the 20s, 30s and 40s in terms of fashion and decor. To have a big Art Deco/Swing event in the social calendar makes me feel like someone’s been listening. Ditch the bell bottoms and polka dots – it’s time to do the Charleston.

You mention the 60-80`s and 20-40`s What about the 50`s. I remember the carry over zoot suits from the 40`s draped pants on the guys. Tight in the butt 36 inch knees and 10-12 inch cuffs and blue jeans folded up just so to reveal white socks and polished black shoes. Great times with the introduction of ROCK AND ROLL to the world with the theme song from Black Board Jungle, Rock Around The Clock by Bill Haley and The Comets. I would go back to those times in a hurry if I had the chance. We did not have near what everyone has today but they were gentler times with none of the PC crap we have today and people seemed to care a lot more.
I would like to add a PS to the above. Back then drug were something you got at the drug store with a prescription from the doctor when you were ill or read about in a book related to the servicemen that got hooked on morphine while injured in WW2.
YES! YES! – especially to swing dancing and Thirties fashions. Except for those silly overdone shoulders you see in the old movies, Thirties fashions were about the last ones which were any use to women who look like women and not like underfed adolescent boys.
