Historic: America elects a black president

I am a staunch conservative, with no patience for liberals and Democrats.

BUT

Whatever my feelings, and whatever yours, we have just borne witness to a piece of American history. Americans have elected their first black president to lead them.

Historic eras in America are all important, but the big ones are few in number: Independence from England, the slavery era, the end of the slavery era, women’s suffrage, the black vote, and the various wars. Those are the biggies. And now, a black president.

What would Abe Lincoln say today? Paging Frederick Douglass for a quote.

More than just rainbows

I wonder how many people voted for Obama just to make history by making a black man the president. It would be just as dumb as voting for McCain because he’s white.

  2. Brett_McS says:

Really? It would be historic only if America is currently a “racist country”. This aspect of American history was made not in one event but by America ceasing, over time, to be racist. After that reality, the election of a black president is a token at best.

If anything is historic it is America electing its first Marxist to the presidency.

  3. Sheila T says:

b – right on! And Brett’s got it right too.

I don’t know what Lincoln would say, but King said, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Looks to me like he was judged by the colour of his skin because the content of his character is sorely lacking. Sad.

In reality, it may not be so much that people wanted Obama – they were just rejecting the Republicans because of their Bush hatred.

  4. Cortillaen says:

Historic? Sure, it’s the first time Affirmative Action mentality has decided the presidency. Does anyone believe Obama would have won had he been a white socialist competing against McCain? The only thing Obama’s election proves is that the pendulum of racism has been pushed in favor of blacks.

Wendy, it seems to me that you are trying to say something honest and difficult, and something that may run against the tide of both your regular readership and some of your own currents of thought.

So I apologize for not hearing that, in my own anger. If anything good is going to happen, it has to start with letting go of some cherished, and may unexamined, resentments, so I’ll try to let go of some of mine.

Good post, and a good thought. Cheers.

    Wendy, A

As a supposed ‘right wing’ blogger, you sure are giving Obama and his leftist peons far greater respect than they would ever give you or George W.

They were and are relentless and merciless in their attacks on conservatism, traditional values and self reliance. While we, it would appear, are far less so. Even to the point of being civil and respectful of democracy when it does not yield the results we want.

Rae was elected in Ontario. Conversatives shrugged in exasperation and muttered “whadaayagonnado?” Harris got elected and the leftists politisized the classroom, rioted at Queens park and refused to be civil about their loss.

That’s why they are winning and will eventually be successful in creating their socialist new world order.

You give them quarter when they deserve only a renewed attack.

And if you can’t muster the resolve to attack, who then can we turn to?

  7. Right Girl says:

Whoa Nelly! I never said I wasn’t planning on attacking. In fact, the next 4 years I will be the lipstick pitbull we’ve heard so much about.

However, I’m not going to attack him on his color, and I’m going to take this moment to congratulate America for this historic choice.

If you don’t like what you read here, you have the option of heading over to Canadian Cynic, where he is currently calling for the gassing of conservatives, Hitler Style.

Wherever I go, I’m always told, “if you don’t like it here, go somewhere else”. It’s the price I pay for challenging everyone and not kissing up to anyone. Oh well, I guess I’ll measure my worth on earth by the number of people pissing on my grave not the number of people laying flowers. Fair enough. And as for Canadian cynic – never heard of him or her. But anyone who calls for the gassing of conservatives has got to be an Obama supproter.

  9. Ms. Aloha says:

History has been made. The first Marxist. period. Oprah is to blame.

  10. mnuez says:

Sorry, but, unlike yourself, I don’t The Great Dictator. People who voted for him (with the exception of Berkley liberals and many African Americans) voted for him because of the issues (though many of us far preferred Edwards or Hillary), and people who voted against him (with the exception of a few Nazi nuts somewhere or other) voted against him as well ON THE ISSUES. To refer to yesterday’s results as events of of world-changing significance is to call Americans backward racists. Which we are not (unless of course your definition of “racism” is as broad as I imagine it likely is, based on what this post says about your educational influences).

The various major happenings surrounding the creation of the country are history worthy, the Civil War is history-worthy, the abolishment of slavery with enfranchisement of blacks in America is history-worthy, WWI is history worthy, The New Deal is history worthy – but so are the publications of books by Mark Twain and HL Mencken, the discovery of the polio vaccine by Salk and Sabin, the write-in MILLLION votes won by the imprisoned socialist Eugene V. Debs, etc, etc.

With all due respect to Harriet Tubman – and plenty is due – Tubmania is a disease in the National Mind that needs to be eradicated, not acquiesced and submitted to by a “Girl On The Right”.

  12. mynalee johnstone says:

Well -b- most people voted for MCCAIN because he IS white.

  13. McCain says:

abe lincoln would say that socialists suck no matter what their irrelevant skin color.

  14. NHrightchick says:

Well, this should hopefully bring an end to affirmative action, right? Now that an African-American has been elected (not by me) to the most powerful position in the world, there is no reason for racism to be an issue. For the record, I didn’t vote based on his color, it was because he has no experience and strongly opposes the 2nd amendment. I will be placing my order for a rifle in the next week, even though it will be several weeks before I can get it, as they have been flying off the shelves from every store in the country.

  15. Lou says:

He will be the first bi-racial President. His mama was white.
