It’s 8 o’clock on the east coast

Cities along the coast have dimmed their lights for Earth Hour.

So, is the planet saved yet?

UPDATE 8:20: As I look to the apartment building across from me, I see that there are a few stubborn lit windows. One neighbor is sitting in his window, typing on his computer… I caught his eye a moment ago. Heh.

UPDATE 8:50: I just took a walk outside. NO ONE has their lights off. So much for Mother Gaia.

Another G&M Poll goes horribly wrong

Sorry, no lights (or computers) off here!

The Gaia-Huggers can blame you and I for not letting the planet be saved.

    We are bad.

I find it interesting that the Nickelodeon Kid Choice Awards was not postponed in honor of Earth Hour. Millions of kids on the East Coast are currently watching it. :)

  4. It’s all about coming together, all about getting the attention.

If we were to all pick an earth hour, during which our household would be darkened, but different from everybody else’s — and then follow through on it — the event would be a failure, even though the hour of carbon-spewing would indeed be saved.

On the other hand, if we were to all agree on the earth hour and talk it up, with java countdown timers on this or that web site and radio spots and TV commercials, and then — whoops! — forget to flip the switch at the designated time…the event would be a smashing success.

It has zilch to do with helping the environment. None. Nada. Bubkes.

There is no way I was going to drink the kool-aid on this one. I don’t mind doing my part and pitching in, but please, an hour for the earth? its’ like only telling your mom you love her on mother’s day. Either get with the program, or don’t, but don’t pretend it just for an hour.

Ironically the husband and I fell asleep on the couch last night with several lights, two computers and the TV on. We finally made it to our bed and shut everything off around 4 a.m.

You noticed Google’s temporary color change, too? Bet it saves LOTS of electricity…(cough)

Did you see the front cover of the Toronto Sun? Just think about how much more energy went into producing and creating all the extra ink to make almost the entire front cover black.

Or read about the multiple “earth day parties” that people in toronto were having, where instead of having lights on people got into their cars and drove for who knows what distance, so they could all sit in the adrk together and pretend to be helping the environment.

    The silliness just never ends.

Tried to get a coffee at Tim’s by the Sobey’s in Peterborough. They had the drive-thru blocked from 8 to 9.

So, I left the car idling and went inside where they were understaffed (probably in some sort of attempt reduce their worker’s carbon footprint…oh, and reduce the payroll) and spent 8 minutes waiting to be served when the drive-thru might have taken 2.

    Yeah. That worked.

  10. Toronto was playing Ottowa. No way anyone would be turning the power off when that is happening!
