But yesterday Julie Etchingham was left to ponder how quickly triumph can turn into humiliation after the most embarrassing gaffe of her career.
She did not realise her microphone was still on when she joked during a David Cameron speech that Conservatives favoured a policy of “extermination” on immigration.
Red-faced bosses at Sky News, which Etchingham, 37, leaves in a matter of weeks to join ITV, apologised over the incident yesterday branding it “regrettable”.
Conservative insiders were particularly annoyed as it was Mr Cameron’s first major speech on immigration, feeling it had turned him into a laughing stock.
Viewers saw Cameron saying: “Let me outline the action that a Conservative government would take. As we have seen, some of the increase in population size results from natural change – birth rates, death rates. Here our policy should be obvious… ”
At which point Etchingham’s voice was then clearly heard to say: “Extermination.”
